About the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10)
What is the K10 Scale?
The K10 scale is a 10-item questionnaire developed by Professor Ronald Kessler and colleagues. It is designed to yield a global measure of distress based on questions about anxiety and depressive symptoms experienced in the most recent 4-week period.
It is widely integrated in Australian mental health settings (such as GP clinics, psychology practices, and Medicare initiatives) to check wellness levels, track therapeutic progress, and support diagnostics.
Clinical Interpretation
The score ranges from 10 to 50. Low scores (10-19) suggest normal levels of mild distress, which can fluctuate naturally. Mid scores (20-29) indicate mild or moderate distress, where seeking a general check-in or counseling can prevent worsening. High scores (30-50) indicate severe distress, warranting immediate check-ins with GPs or qualified practitioners.
Important: A high score is not a definitive diagnosis of anxiety or depression, but it indicates a level of clinical concern that is highly responsive to professional care.
